What is the difference between an accountant versus book-keeper?

A traditional book-keeper tasks include the following :

- Recording of financial transactions

- Posting debit and credits

- Maintaining and balancing ledgers and accounts.

This is in contrast to the tasks that an accountant perform which requires

- Generating reports such as income statement, balance sheets, statement of change of equity, cash flow statement

- Providing information used for forecasting, business trending and business opportunities

- Posting of adjusting entries

Traditional book keeper focuses on the mandatory tasks where as accountant focuses on value added services.

Do companies need book-keepers or accountants?

With the presence of accounting software such as XEROX, Quickbook, a job of a book keeper is simplified but setting up and maintaining the chart of accounts are jobs that cannot be easily replaced by a software. Human intervention is still required for this.

The job of an accountant is one that cannot be replaced easily by software as interpretation of data, accounting and taxations laws are constantly evolving. An accountant will also help to identify possible business opportunities via the review of financials.
